AIM
This program is designed to provide a Shell accepted course for all personnel working or traveling on, or over cold water, associated with oil exploration/production platforms with the knowledge and skills necessary to react appropriately to an aircraft ditching emergency and conduct an underwater egress utilizing Shark Survival’s Air Pocket Plus™ breathing system and Helicopter Emergency Egress Device (HEED III) emergency breathing system. This course is based on the OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization) standards.

Hazards and emergencies associated with aircraft over cold water operations

Hazards and emergencies associated with oil exploration and production platforms

Safety and survival equipment requirements and utilization (Vessel/Platform/Helicopter)

Introduction to hypothermia mitigation cold environs hazards, and sea and land survival techniques

Coping with physical, physiological, and psychological stress

Personal rescue techniques and use of life rafts, signaling devices, and other survival equipment

Characteristics of immersion suits, personal floatation devices, and aviation jackets

Introduction to search and rescue resources, equipment, and use of helicopter lifting strop with simulated rescue

Oil platform, vessel and helicopter emergency evacuation, routes, exit operation, and procedures

Life raft righting, boarding, and survival patterns (Practical)

HEED III emergency air breathing system utilization
-
Air Pocket Plus ™ emergency breathing systems utilization
-
Preparation for emergency landing and ditching situations
-
Donning of immersion suits, permanent buoyancy lifejackets, and aviation lifejackets (Practical)

Immersion suit and aircraft transit survival suit group formation and survival techniques (Practical)

Evacuation and escape training utilizing the Modular Egress Training Simulator (METS™)
-
Dry evacuation through an emergency exit to an aviation life raft

From ditched aircraft on surface of the water

Performing vital primary and secondary actions

Partially submerged helicopter escape through and underwater escape exit
-
Capsized helicopter escape utilizing the Air Pocket Plus ™, followed by inflation of an aviation lifejacket after reaching the surface
-
Capsized helicopter escape utilizing the HEED III breathing system
*Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) while wearing a survival suit
DURATION
16 Hours
PREREQUISITES
* A statement of health form (completed on first day of course)
* Trainees are expected to be in a good state of health and physically capable of taking part in all course activities. Those trainees in noncompliance will be refused and billed for the full course.
CERTIFICATION
All persons who successfully complete the program based on performance standards will receive a Survival Systems certificate of completion and laminated wallet card.
